0 Boston Off Campus Housing Search

Congratulations college students on another semester finished. Hopefully, you made it through with most of your hair. Now, it’s time to find that apartment for next semester. If you’ve lived in Boston for awhile, you are aware that off campus housing for September 1st starts renting in January. That isn’t to say you’ve missed the bus completely, but now it’s time to hustle.

Here’s the issue…over the last few weeks you’ve said to yourself, “Hey, self, I should get a group of my new favorite friends together to live with next year because my old friends are lame. I mean, who still listens to Vampire Weekend? I hate Josh.”, or something like that.

The next thing you did was go online to search for an apartment in Boston and of course you ended up on the best website for Boston off campus housing, AllAccessBoston.com. You signed up, found a few apartments you liked…maybe you even exchanged a few emails with a real estate agent. Then you disappeared off the face of the Earth into the dark land of finals.

As finals went on you forgot all about your apartment search. Eventually, you passed everything and hopefully saved the school while getting back at the evil dean in some Van Wilderesque moment. Then of course, it became time to celebrate. The next week ended up being a blur of parties, after-parties, and walks of shame. But wait, didn’t you need an apartment?

So, two to three weeks have passed by since you looked at those great Boston off campus housing options on AllAccessBoston.com and do you know what happened? They rented. That’s what happened. Uh-oh. Alright, new game plan. Get yourself back onto AllAccessBoston.com and let’s start your Boston off campus housing search in earnest. There are two very simple avenues we can choose. You can find a number of listings that interest you and click the “Request A Showing” button on each, or, you can respond to the e-mail that your assigned real estate agent sent you. You can even just call our office at 617-981-6900 and yell “HELP” into the receiver. We’ll take care of you all the same.

What’s important is that you get moving on your apartment search now. Soon you’ll be off on vacations, finding a summer job, or holing yourself up in your home so that no one can interrupt your 3 month Call of Duty binge. The priority needs to be your next apartment though. Let us help you get that taken care of before all of your options are gone. Once we get your Boston off campus housing search squared away, you are free to enjoy your summer without a care in the world.

2 5 Tips For Moving In Boston

It has been far too long that we’ve gone blogless. Frankly things have just been so hectic in the Boston real estate world that typing had to take a back seat. We’re closing in on the month of September now though and things are about to go from hectic to ugly (if you’re in a car on 9/1). Moving on September 1st in Boston is one of the most harrowing experiences you will ever have. Picture “Paperboy” for Nintendo but with a U-Haul truck and 1000 people playing at once.

Here are 5 tips to make moving in Boston a little easier.

1. You should already have reserved a moving truck by now. If you haven’t, you’re going to be driving to Western MA to find the closest available truck (trust me I did this as a college student). Still, call up the truck rental office and confirm your reservation and pick-up time. Nothing will ruin your day than not having a moving truck.

2. Find out which of your friends are not moving and then bribe them heavily. No one wants to move all of their stuff on their own. On the flip side, no one really wants to helpĀ  you so the bribe better be hefty. A cheese pizza isn’t going to cut it.

3. Know when you are going to be able to move-in. Some landlords won’t give out keys until a certain time during the day. They need to change locks in each of their units and that takes some time. Don’t necessarily expect to be getting into your new apartment at 9am.

4. Call up your utility companies and schedule hook-ups now. Sure, you can wait to tell the electric company you’re coming…they’ll leave the juice on. However, you’re going to want to have internet asap and if you wait until you move in, you could be waiting another two weeks depending on demand. If you call now, you can schedule someone to come hook-up your cable and internet right away.

5. Document any damage in your apartment. You’ve probably made a few scuffs and scratches here and there, but you don’t want to have your security deposit docked because the next tenant puts a hole in the wall while they’re moving in. They’re going to be documenting damage in the first 15 days they live in your old place so don’t let anything that happens then be pinned on you. Does your smart-phone have a video camera? Fire that thing up and go Spielberg all over your home (DO NOT go Michael Bay, we can not stress this enough).

The bottom line is, no one likes moving. Packing, lifting, driving, lifting, unpacking…there’s no part in there that sounds fun. The idea is to limit the stress. I have done this by moving down the hall from my current apartment. If you haven’t gone with the “100 foot move” like myself, make sure to take these moving day tips to heart so that you can get things moving as quickly and easily as possible.
